Thomas
A. Krenitsky, Ph.D. - Principal founder, President, and CEO. Dr.
Krenitsky is a recognized authority on drug discovery and development.
After receiving his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Cornell University, he did
a postdoctoral
fellowship at Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research and then joined
the research faculty at Yale Medical School. In 1966, he joined the research
group of Drs. George H. Hitchings and Gertrude B. Elion at Burroughs Wellcome
Co (BW Co.). Drs. Hitchings and Elion received the 1988 Nobel Prize in
Medicine for the outstanding series of innovative drugs that emanated from
their laboratories.
Dr. Krenitsky worked directly with these outstanding scientists until their
retirements. In 1983, he succeeded Dr. Elion as head of the Experimental
Therapy Division and in 1989 was appointed Vice President of Research at
BW Co. In this capacity, he had responsibility for over 500 professional
scientists and support staff. Under his leadership, much of the development
pipeline at BW Co.was discovered. In addition to drug discovery, a large
part of the preclinical development functions were performed in the Research
Unit at BW Co. under Dr. Krenitsky’s direction. He also played a
key role in licensing activities, including assessment of drug candidates
and
negotiations on terms. He was a member of the BW Co. committee overseeing
the clinical development of drug candidates from 1983 to 1995. Dr. Krenitsky
is the author or co-author of 90 full scientific papers and 32 abstracts
dealing with drug discovery. He is inventor on 30 issued US patents
with more pending. He served on the Board of Directors of The Burroughs Wellcome
Fund from 1990 to 1996. Dr. Krenitsky is an inventor of the drug nelaribine
that is being clinically studied for T-cell malignancies and was intimately
involved
in the discovery and development of VALTREX®.
Wayne
R. Eberhardt, Ch.E./J.D. - Vice President, Business Development,
General Counsel and Secretary. Mr. Eberhardt is the former Chief
Patent Counsel of Burroughs Wellcome Co, and has over 25 years experience
in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industry. He received
his law degree from St. Louis University in 1973 while employed as
a patent agent by Monsanto, and was subsequently employed as a patent
attorney with Johnson & Johnson from 1974 to 1989, during which
time he acquired broad experience in the health care and pharmaceutical
industry. As a senior attorney at Johnson & Johnson, he secured
worldwide patent rights, provided infringement and validity opinions
on third party patents, negotiated patent and technology licenses,
served on the Board of Directors for Ethicon, and advised management
on a wide variety of patent, R & D, and business issues. In 1989,
he rejoined Monsanto as a senior patent attorney with responsibility
for chemical and biotechnology developments in the Animal Sciences
Division. In 1992, he joined Burroughs Wellcome Co as Chief Patent
Counsel with responsibility for organizing its patent department,
advising management in all matters relating to U.S. patents, and
coordinating
patent activities with the parent company in the U.K.
Sylvia C. Stanat, B.A. – Treasurer.
After receiving her Bachelors degree in biology from Antioch College in Yellow
Springs, Ohio, Ms. Stanat was employed as a research scientist in the CNS Division
at Parke-Davis Co. She later joined the Lineberger Cancer Center at the University
of NC at Chapel Hill, and then Burroughs Wellcome Co. as a research scientist
in the Virology Department. She has authored and co-authored over 30 scientific
papers and is an expert in mammalian cell culture. Ms. Stanat serves as a valued
scientific advisor to KPI as well as its treasurer.
Joseph H. Sica is
an experienced investor. Mr. Sica advises KPI on business matters.
